The Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) is a nation-wide professional academic group that is voluntarily constituted by clinical oncology professionals, relevant enterprises and public institutions. CSCO has made rapid progress and remarkable achievements, and has made contributions to China 's cause of clinical oncology. It has become one of the most active and influential academic organizations in this field, both at home and abroad.
On April 28th, 1997, over 200 top oncologists gathered at Beijing Hotel and initiated the establishment of CSCO. This young association, constituted with senior, mid-aged and young experts, has been cooperating with each other in good faith, persistently going through ups and downs, actively dealing with concrete matters, exploiting new ways and has by now become the third largest academic association in the field of clinical oncology throughout the world. By now, the amount of CSCO membership has exceeded 8,000, including clinical workers from 33 provinces, cities, autonomous regions across China, special administrative regions of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and Chinese doctors studying overseas. Of all its members, over 65% are senior titled doctors. Most members are heads of their respective hospitals or academic leaders, of which, 13 are academicians of both the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a large number are distinguished experts or scholars. 50 reputable domestic and international public institutions and famous pharmaceutical enterprises joined CSCO as group members or strategic cooperation partners, participating in scientific and charity activities organized by CSCO and sharing weal and woe.
In strengthening the academic communication and cooperation with famous international oncology institutes, CSCO rapidly jointed the international oncology research circle and therein achieved a series of remarkable accomplishments: CSCO made the high-level mutual visits with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and realized mutual-recognition and reciprocal membership with them respectively; it also established intimate relations with World Health Organization (WHO), International Union Against Cancer (UICC), International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR), European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), Asian Clinical Oncology Society (ACOS) and Clinical Oncological Society of Australia (COSA) etc. Cooperated with ASCO, CSCO held the first and second Multi-disciplinary Cancer Management Course (MCMC) training program in China in 2005 and 2007 separately. In September 2006, CSCO hosted the 7th International Conference of the Asian Clinical Oncology Society (ACOS) in Beijing .
Nowadays, CSCO is not only a famous non-governmental academic association, but also a stage where the Chinese clinical oncologists discuss professional subjects, communicate experience, and share the outcome of relevant study. On one hand, we adhere to principles; on the other, we uphold the spirit of flexibility, advocate sincerity, generosity and mutual-understanding, so as to probe into the essence of life, solve problems, and serve the members, patients, the country and human being at large.
